When advertisers compete for online video ad spots, publishers earn more ad revenue.
Getting Started
Publishers can make their ad inventory available to the SpotXchange aggregated advertiser network in four simple steps.
Step 1
Complete an online application
Step 2
The SpotXchange team will review your application and activate your account. There are some types of content we do not accept.
Step 3
Log in to your account and set up channels and subchannels, and their associated profiles. In this step you specify your minimum bid, restrict advertising content as appropriate, and characterize your channel by one or more of up to 500 segmented content categories. You can also provide detailed demographic information about your visitors. You can add, edit or remove channels at any time, in real-time.
Step 4
Begin calling the SpotXchange platform for commercials using MAD RSS, and start maximizing revenue from your available online video ad slot inventory.

SpotXchange is a hosted ad management platform that provides targeted ad insertion and scheduling, campaign management and reporting—in the world's first auction-based exchange for streaming video ad spots. Advertisers target their campaigns against particular contextual, geographic and demographic criteria associated with publisher properties, and bid an amount they are willing to pay for this targeted impression. Each time a SpotXchange network publisher queries our platform for an ad, the advertiser's bid amount is compared to all other bid amounts for the same target, and SpotXchange serves the most-valuable advertisement to the publisher's stream—much as pay per click search engine platforms serve the most valuable results for each query.
Dynamic pricing at the impression level combined with sophisticated ad targeting allows publishers to earn higher rates and sell more inventory than they could through a fixed price or negotiated sales process, with significantly less expense and overhead. Not only does every unique impression opportunity earn the highest price any advertiser in the network is willing to pay, but the ability for publishers to set minimum bid amounts ensures that impressions never sell for less than the publisher's minimum threshold.
SpotXchange does the work for you, streamlining the ad-sales process:
We gather the advertisers in one place so that they can compete to show up alongside your content.
- We handle billing and payment processing
- We serve and host the video ads—you call only one feed, not many
- SpotXchange monitors ads for quality and performance
- We dynamically select the best possible ad for your content based upon a variety of factors
- Time of day
- Location of the user
- Demographic data (when available)
- Type of content
- Highest bid amount
SpotXchange leverages Limelight Networks' best-in-class content delivery network for a reliable, seamless user experience. SpotXchange ads load in the background and are streamed directly into the media player in slots the publisher designates. There is no lag time and no performance issues, and SpotXchange ads are served in the formats your users demand: Windows Media, QuickTime or Flash.
SpotXchange gives publishers more control over the advertising that appears alongside their content:
Publishers can restrict the types of ads associated with their content. Restrictions include the following:
- Advertiser by name
- Advertiser Categories (alcohol, tobacco, gambling etc.)
- Minimum Cost per View
- Maximum length of video ad
All advertisements are reviewed by a quality assurance team to verify their content, minimizing the possibility that inappropriate ads could be served alongside your content.
Publishers determine the placement of the video ads in their content:
- Pre-roll
- Mid-roll
- Post-roll
Ad Insertion
The SpotXchange platform simplifies ad-serving for publishers. As a publisher, you call the ads using an XML query known as MAD RSS (Media Advertising Really Simple Syndication). The call contains critical information about your site, max duration of requested commercial, video format, synchronized banner size and viewer geography. SpotXchange then returns the commercial that is most relevant and valuable to this impression opportunity.
Tracking and payment
SpotXchange provides an advanced reporting interface, which shows you precisely how your content is monetizing. Reports include
- Number of calls
- Impressions served
- Revenue earned
- Value per impression
- Number of clicks
- Click through rates when adjacent banners are served
Publisher payments are made monthly.
