Meet Joel DuBien, VP of Engineering at SpotX. A SpotX employee since 2011, Joel has seen it all. Top-tier engineering talent is of utmost importance at SpotX, so I sat down with Joel to learn more about what it takes to become a member of his team.
If you could describe the culture at SpotX in one word, what would it be?
JD: Driven. Driven to be better. Driven to enjoy every day. Driven to play as hard as we work.
Do you have any favorite tools or techniques that help you stay productive?
JD: If a developer is coding with headphones, it is an unspoken rule that you do not interrupt them. They are “wired in” and getting things done. We also use a continuous integration tool called Jenkins, which coordinates automation with every code, running unit checks to make sure everything is working.
How do you stay connected with your teammates both at SpotX HQ and remotely around the globe?
JD: Besides email, we use Slack, Google Hangouts for video conferencing and screen sharing, and Sketchboard.io for whiteboarding sessions.
What qualities do you most value in a teammate?
JD: Tenacious dedication. Not trying the same thing over and over, but trying something different and being innovative. They have to be good troubleshooters and not willing to give up easily. We want our team members to have the flexibility to improve processes and present ideas.
What makes the engineering team work well together? Is there a workflow, process, rule, etc. that helps?
JD: We practice some advanced forms of Agile processes. Most teams are scrum based, which allows the team to define the amount of work they can complete in a sprint. Other teams have been using Kanban, which allows them to pivot quickly and focus on efficiency. We apply these Agile processes at the organization level as well, and meet daily to discuss ongoing cross-team projects.
What advice would you give someone thinking about applying for an engineering position at SpotX?
JD: I think it depends on the position, but overall taking initiative and being proactive goes a long way. Come in and show that you’ve taken time to apply real world examples to what you’ve already learned. For new grads and interns, being excited about learning the world of ad tech and the SpotX software will give you the experience you need to become a full stack or software engineer.
Meet Joel and the rest of the SpotX engineering team at our open house on February 16th at our office in Denver, CO.
